Mother said, “You quiet down.”

For the character (Mother), the sentence was “You quiet down.” That’s the sentence she spoke. “You” is the subject, and “quiet” is the verb. BUT—

For the reader, the sentence is, “Mother said, ‘You quiet down.” Mother is the subject of that sentence. Said is the verb. “Quiet down” has become the object of a new sentence. It’s what she said. For the reader, the sentence is longer than it was for the character.
